The term “Mexico REACH” is sometimes used informally to describe the country’s evolving chemical management framework. However, it is important to note that there is currently no single Mexican law called “Mexico REACH.” Instead, chemical compliance in Mexico is governed by the existing legal framework and the corresponding technical standards, which are enforced by multiple authorities.

Current and Future Registries
Mexico already maintains a National Inventory of Chemical Substances to manage chemicals currently on the market. Additionally, a more comprehensive chemical registry is currently under development. In fact, a draft legislation to establish a National Registry of Chemical Substances was recently introduced in the Mexican Federal Congress in February 2026.
Ongoing Obligations
While this new registry moves through the legislative process, businesses must continue to comply with all current legal and regulatory requirements in force today. Proactive preparation now will help ensure a smooth transition when the new framework eventually takes effect.

1. Does Mexico have REACH? Does Mexico have REACH like legislation?
Is there chemical registration in Mexico? Chemical registration in Mexico is a somewhat gray area. Certain products, chemicals and business sectors are required to register, obtain permits, notifications, etc., while others are not.
2. Does Mexico have a chemical inventory?
Yes. The National Inventory of Chemical Substances of Mexico exists; however it is not a chemical registration system such as the one found in the EU in the frame of REACH.
3. Is Mexico introducing a chemical registry?
A bill was recently introduced in February 2026 to create a National Registry of Chemical Substances within Mexico, but as a bill it has not yet become law and therefore would not apply as a general chemical registration requirement at this time.
4. Is GHS mandatory in Mexico?
NOM-018-STPS-2015 establishes the common criteria to identify the hazards of chemicals and to communicate information of their hazardous nature in workplaces where they are used.
5. Are Safety Data Sheets required in Spanish in Mexico?
For chemicals covered by such workplace hazardous chemical requirements an SDS must be prepared and be written in Spanish and have the appropriate structure in accordance with the corresponding requirements.
